Anyone who has ever played around with an RC vehicle of any sort cannot deny the fun to be had in the hobby. Most take to it instantly. Whether you just want to find something enjoyable to pass the time with, or you have aspirations to be a radio controlled car enthusiast who races competitively, there is the perfect vehicle out there just waiting for you. But what are the things that you should consider before making the commitment to purchase something? There are several that come to mind.

RC vehicles do come in all forms. Whether you want to play by land, sea, or air there is a remote controlled vehicle to quench your thirst for excitement. Cars, trucks, planes, helicopters, boats, and even hovercrafts are all available to you. You will naturally have an idea of which of these appeals to you more, of course, but you should also consider things like your physical surroundings, willingness to travel, and skill level. Those who live in a big city with gigantic skyscrapers as far as the eye can see, for example, may have very little use for a radio controlled plane that you need lots of open country in order to operate to its full potential. Speaking of planes, another thing that you need to think about is whether you would want to start your hobby out with something that is, by nature, more difficult to control, or whether you would prefer to begin a little more slowly. It is harder to lose or damage an RC car or truck. A plane that can be significantly affected by changes in the air current and very well may crash and burn right in front of you is another matter though.

For those who do want to start off with an RC car, a common question that could be your undoing is, which one is the fastest. While the desire for speed is understandable, that is another thing that needs some consideration. The average speed of an RC car or truck tops out at around thirty or forty miles per hour. People who have never operated one don't realize that this is extremely fast when you consider the size of the model. They get mesmerized by the idea of speed. One of, if not the, fastest radio controlled car out there goes from zero to sixty miles per hour in about three seconds. While this is impressive, you have to realize that racing away at this sort of speed makes controlling the car more difficult. The smallest twitch in the wrong direction on your controller could send you into a crash worthy of NASCAR.

Many people, instead of going for the glitz and glamor of high speed low drag, choose to get their first introduction to the hobby by simply buying a toy quality model that is ready to run right out of the box. There is nothing wrong with this. It is a nice, simple way to get your feet wet which is also generally less expensive than investing in some of the advanced, customizable vehicles out there. With these RC vehicles, you will notice a reduction in power and speed, as well as having no ability to upgrade without the need to get an entirely new model. But for your first real introduction to the hobby, this could be exactly what you need.

Radio controlled vehicles begin at just under a hundred dollars, with some of the advanced models running up to around the thousand dollar mark. They can be a significant investment. This is money well spent when you consider the amount of enjoyment you will get out of the hobby over the years. But just as you wouldn't necessarily buy the fastest racing bike if you have never ridden a motorcycle before, you would do well to consider the realities of your skill level when controlling RC vehicles before you run out and buy the most expensive thing that you can find right off.
